Episode Six: Reunion

Liu Mengmei sets out looking for Du Liniang?s parents, carrying Du?s self-portrait. Exhausted both physically and financially, Liu arrives at the celebration banquet for Du Bao?s new position and announces that he is the Prime Minister?s son-in-law. Du Bao is outraged and has Liu Mengmei arrested and sent to jail. Fortunately, with the war over, the announcement comes that Liu is decreed the Prize Candidate. Still, Liu?s sufferings are not over. Prime Minister Du Bao has Liu brought in for interrogation and Liu tells his story. Du Bao is frightened and infuriated and has Liu tortured, hoping to extract a confession. Du Bao insists that his daughter is long dead and that this self-proclaimed son-in-law must be an evil spirit. Madam Du and Du Liniang, who have been reunited, receive the mixed news of Liu Mengmei, as Prize Candidate and prisoner of Du Bao. To find out the truth, Liu Mengmei, Du Liniang, and Madam Du each tell their stories to the Emperor. The Emperor tests Du Liniang with a mirror to prove that she is a living woman, not a ghost. Du Bao still refuses to accept the truth and insists that they are all evil spirits. The Emperor decides: Du Liniang and Liu Mengmei?s marriage is approved; Liu Mengmei is appointed Scholar of the Imperial Hanlin Academy; his wife Du Liniang is appointed Mistress of Hanghe County. Du Liniang tries to convince her father and husband to make peace for a happy ending.
