Two: Pursuing the Dream
Madam Du forbids her daughter to visit
the garden again. But Du Liniang longs to return to
her dream world and follows the path to the garden.
There, she cannot find her lover and is broken-hearted.
Devastated, she falls ill and prepares for her death
by painting a self-portrait that will be a record of
her beauty. She inscribes a poem on the portrait, addressing
it to her lover.
Liu Mengmei leaves home in quest of his fortune, leaving
behind Camel Guo, his gardener, who begs him to stay
and sit for the Confucian exam.
At
the same time, in the north, the Barbarian King of the
Jin Invaders envisions himself living in southern China.
He enlists of the help of the bandit, Li Quan, and his
powerful wife, Dame Li.
Du Liniangšs condition worsens. Madam Du, convinced
that her daughter has fallen under a spell in the garden,
asks Sister Stone, a Taoist nun who is born with a "rock-hard
hymen," to exorcise the evil spirits. The Tutor Chen
prepares herbal remedies, but nothing can save Du Liniang.
Before her death, she asks her mother to bury her body
beneath the plum tree and tells Spring Fragrance to
have her portrait placed in a rosewood box nearby in
the hope that someday her dream lover may find her.
